what is a trailing spouse

Answer

This derogatory term refers to the non-working partner who follows his/her spouse to another country, usually because the employed partner has been given a job or assignment overseas. Because the trailing spouse by necessity 'follows' the working one, this term has been used so frequently it is in common parlance. Accompanying partner is more acceptable and in 2011 Apple Gidley coined the phrase STARS - Spouses Travelling and Relocating Successful - which is becoming more used.
