Don't Tell Me What To Do: A Spiritual Memoir
Just kill me now, LORD! I'd rather be dead than alive, because nothing I predicted is going to happen. – Jonah 4:3

How did a white girl become my roommate?

Answer

I was hit with many surprises during my first year in college, among them being that my African American roommate's girlfriend was a white girl. The other surprise was that she would sleep over many nights during the week and make herself comfortable in a dorm room designed for two people, as I described in my memoir . . . .

When I was informed my roommate’s name was Andrew McDowell. I had thought he might be a white boy. But when we met, he was, in fact, black. I was folding and putting away my clothes when he walked into the room with his luggage, and his white girlfriend. We shook hands. He was about six feet tall with neatly cut hair. He looked around the room and threw a suitcase on a bed. “I’ll take this bed.” I stared in amazement. I couldn't believe that he had waltzed in and claimed a bed just like that. The bed he had commandeered was the bed I wanted! I let it go. It was only a bed. I continued on with what I was doing.
He left the room and returned with a stereo system. I ignored him. I didn't want to get nasty with the guy. I left the room to pick up my student identification card. Without it, I wouldn't be able to eat in the cafeteria. I then went to the cafeteria to get something for lunch. I was starving and looking forward to eating real food after leaving prison.
