Gun

The chime rang at the tenth floor. I took a deep breath and walked out the elevator, looking down the hall before I started towards the apartment. The hall was empty. I heard music coming from down the hall. Was Everett there? I walked a few feet down the hall when I heard the elevator door open and shut behind me. I kept on walking.

Suddenly, from behind, someone grabbed me by the collar of my jacket. I frantically pulled away out of the grip, believing that it was Everett behind me. Snatching the gun from my belt, I spun around, pointing the gun before me and pulling the trigger. The gun didn't fire. That’s when I realized that it was my father—not Everett—who I had tried to shoot.

Shocked, I backed up, and he rushed up to me and slapped me hard in the face, knocking me to the floor. I dropped the gun.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing!” he shouted down at me. The gun was lying beside me. He picked up the gun and pointed it at my head. “Before I let someone kill you,“ he said, staring down at me, “I’ll kill you myself!”

I closed my eyes tight, not knowing what was going to happen next. I had never seen him this mad before.

“Get up! Get the hell up!” he screamed down at me, still brandishing the gun in my face.

I struggled to my feet. He’s crazy, I thought to myself. He’s gonna kill me!

“What’s this about?” he demanded to know. “Who were you going to shoot? Me?”
