What does 'Muslim' mean?

Find out what Muslim means. Muslim is explained by Jack Scott - author of Perking the Pansies

Muslim

A Muslim is an adherent of Islam, a monotheistic Abrahamic religion based on the Koran (Qur'an) which Muslims consider the verbatim word and final testament of God (Allah) as revealed to the prophet Muhammad. "Muslim" is an Arabic word meaning "one who submits to God". Most Muslims accept that to become a Muslim, one need only publicly pronounce the declaration of faith which states, "I testify that there is no god except for Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The basic tenets of Islam are the Five Pillars - daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, almsgiving and the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime. It is currently estimated that there are between 1.2 and 1.6 billion Muslims across the world. Turkey is a Muslim majority country. Nominally, around 98% of Turks are Muslim though many consider it to be a cultural identity rather than a religious one. Why would a British gay couple choose to live in a Muslim Turkey? Find out in Jack Scott’s memoir, Perking the Pansies, Jack and Liam move to Turkey.
